Pagan Lingo

Paganism has it's own words, and they become common among Pagans. Starting off you might find yourself saying, "What does .... mean?" or "Excuse me?". Don't worry, most or all, have been through this. Alphabetically from A-Z there will be Pagan words (well, not really Pagan - most likely associated words). And, well, not exactly to Z. ^_^

Akasha: another term that can be used for spirit (not as in ghosts).

Altar: special, flat surface area used for magickal workings and/or religious acknowledgement used mainly in rituals.

Amulet: an object of protection that has been charged with energy (by the wearer) to ward off negative energies, etc.

Astral: like another dimension of reality.

Astral Travel/Projection: separating from the physical body (the astral part of the body separates) to travel in the Astral.

Athame: ceremonial knife, sometimes double-bladed, usually used by Wiccans and Witches. Never used for blood-letting.

Bane: synonym for bad, evil, destructive.

Bind: to restrain someone or something from causing harm to others.

Book of Shadows: also known as a Grimoire - rituals, spells, magickal workings kept written down in a book. Mainly used by Wiccans and Witches, though Pagans can find it handy.

Call: Invoking deity(ies) forces.

Chakras: seven major energy vortexes found in the human body. Usually associated with colour; white - crown, purple - forehead, blue - throat, pink or green - chest, yellow - navel, orange - navel and red - groin. Smaller vortexes located on hands and feet.

Cleansing: act of removing negative energy from an area, object by replacing with positive energy.

Consecration: act of charging an object with positive energy, ideal for altar items.

Drawing Down the Moon: ritual used during the Full Moon by Witches and Wiccans to empower themselve and unite with a particular deity, usually the (a) Goddess. Also to aid in magickal workings.

Elements: basic elements of the earth and spirit - earth, air, fire, water, akasha (spirit). Associated with direction: North - Earth, East - Air, South - Fire, West - Water, Centre - Akasha.

Familiar: an animal who has spiritual bond with Pagan, Witch or Wiccan, can be family pet. Can also be in the astral plane.

Handfasting: A Pagan or Wiccan marriage ceremony.

Karma: in other terms, what you put out you get back. Put bad into the world and it will come back in another way. Put good out and good will come in return. "That instant Karma's gonna get you..."

(Magick) Circle: a circle usually mentally drawn when performing magickal workings and/or rituals. Usually the circle must not be broken during a ritual, and is to protect from negative forces that may be surrounding from affecting work. Style of casting the circle is sometimes based on tradition, coven, or solitary.

Merry Meet: a Pagan greeting. Also written/typed as MM or mm.

Merry Part: a Pagan farewell. Also written/typed as MP or mp.

Pentacle: A circle surrounding a five-pointed star, pointing UPRIGHT. See pentacles. Mainly worn by Wiccans and Witches, some Pagans find in comfort to wearing the pentacle as a sign of their belief.

Priestess: A female dedicated to both the service of her chosen deity(oes) and human kind. Can be Pagan or Wiccan. A High Priestess is the feminine leader of a coven or Wiccan organisation and plays the rold of the Goddess in certain ceremonies. A particular solitray can be a Priestess to their chosen deity(ies)

Priest: A male dedicated to the service of both his chosen deity(ies) and humankind. A High Priest is the male leader in a coven or Wiccan organisation and plays the God in certain ceremonies. A Priest can be solitary to their chosen deity(ies).

Reincarnation: the belief of when passed away (died), another life will be taken on and that one has lived many lives before.

Ritual: ceremony done during sabbats, and/or particular holidays of tradition and/or honour deity(ies).

Skyclad: In some traditions, like Alexandrian, ceremonies are done in the nude. It does not imply with sexual contact and some solitaries perfer to work in skyclad.
